Types of Therapy We Offer

ACT Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps individuals learn to accept difficult thoughts and feelings rather than struggling to eliminate them. Through mindfulness strategies and values-based goal setting, ACT teaches clients how to develop greater psychological flexibility, which is linked to reduced emotional distress and improved quality of life. Rather than trying to "fix" uncomfortable emotions, ACT focuses on building a more meaningful life by taking committed action aligned with one's core values. This treatment is particularly effective for anxiety, depression, trauma, and chronic stress.

ADHD Treatment

Treatment for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) involves addressing difficulties with attention regulation, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and executive functioning challenges. Therapy typically focuses on developing practical skills for managing time, organization, goal setting, and emotional regulation, as well as addressing self-esteem issues that often accompany ADHD. For children, teens, and adults alike, evidence-based interventions such as behavioral training, cognitive strategies, and coaching techniques can significantly improve daily functioning. ADHD therapy may also involve collaboration with families, schools, or workplaces to create supportive environments for success.

Anxiety Treatment

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, but they are also highly treatable with the right interventions. At CBTAA, anxiety treatment focuses on helping individuals understand the physiological, cognitive, and behavioral components of anxiety, and learn how to manage symptoms through proven techniques. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and mindfulness strategies are often used to reduce avoidance behaviors, challenge catastrophic thinking, and build tolerance for uncertainty. Treatment is individualized and may focus on specific anxiety disorders such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, or specific phobias.

Autism Support

Therapeutic support for individuals on the autism spectrum focuses on enhancing communication, emotional regulation, daily living skills, and social connections. Our approach recognizes the diversity within the autism community and is tailored to the individual's developmental level, needs, and strengths. Therapy may include structured behavioral interventions, skill-building activities, and support for co-occurring challenges such as anxiety or ADHD. For children, teens, and adults alike, the goal is to foster greater independence, emotional well-being, and meaningful participation in relationships and community life.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment

Bipolar disorder is a complex mood disorder characterized by alternating periods of depression and mania or hypomania. Effective treatment focuses on mood stabilization, relapse prevention, emotional regulation, and functional recovery. Therapy often incorporates psychoeducation about the nature of bipolar disorder, early warning sign detection, and strategies to manage triggers and lifestyle factors that can influence mood swings. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT), and family-focused interventions are commonly used to support individuals in achieving stability and improving quality of life.

Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) involves significant challenges with emotional regulation, impulse control, self-image, and interpersonal relationships. Treatment for BPD at CBTAA often includes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a structured, skills-based approach proven to reduce self-harming behaviors, emotional volatility, and relational instability. Therapy focuses on building skills in distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Over time, individuals learn how to navigate emotions more effectively, reduce impulsive reactions, and foster healthier, more stable relationships.

CBT Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based treatment that focuses on making real, measurable changes in thoughts, behaviors, and emotional well-being. Backed by decades of research, CBT is highly effective for treating conditions like anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, and ADHD. The core idea behind CBT is that our thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and physical responses are deeply connected, and by changing what we can control, especially our behaviors, we can create lasting improvements in how we feel and function. CBT is short-term, goal-oriented, and practical. Clients work collaboratively with therapists to break unhelpful patterns, build actionable skills, and develop strategies they can use in daily life — even long after therapy ends.

Child Therapy

Child therapy at CBTAA provides a safe, supportive environment where children can express themselves, build emotional regulation skills, and develop healthy coping strategies. Our child therapists use developmentally appropriate techniques such as play therapy, behavioral interventions, and cognitive strategies tailored to each child's age and needs. Therapy may address concerns such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral challenges, and family transitions. Early intervention can foster greater emotional resilience and prevent future difficulties.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy focuses on helping partners strengthen communication, rebuild trust, navigate conflicts, and deepen emotional intimacy. Using evidence-based approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method, therapists work collaboratively with couples to identify negative cycles, improve understanding, and create healthier patterns of connection. Couples therapy can be beneficial at any stage of a relationship — whether addressing long-standing challenges, recovering from betrayal, or proactively strengthening the bond.

Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT Therapy)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a skills-based treatment designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, reduce impulsive behaviors, and improve interpersonal relationships. Originally developed for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), DBT has been adapted to treat a wide range of mental health conditions including PTSD, depression, and eating disorders. DBT combines acceptance-based strategies with behavior change techniques, teaching skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Treatment typically includes individual therapy, group skills training, and coaching support.

Depression Treatment

Depression is a serious but treatable mental health condition that can impact mood, motivation, sleep, energy, and overall functioning. At CBTAA, we offer evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Behavioral Activation, and mindfulness-based interventions to help individuals break the cycle of depression. Therapy focuses on identifying and shifting unhelpful thought patterns, re-engaging with meaningful activities, and building coping strategies that promote long-term recovery and resilience.

Gender Identification Support

Therapy for gender identity exploration provides a supportive and affirming environment for individuals navigating questions related to gender, transition, and self-expression. Our clinicians are trained to work with individuals across the gender spectrum and offer evidence-based, compassionate care tailored to each person's unique experience. Therapy may involve exploring identity, addressing coming-out experiences, navigating medical or social transitions, and building a strong, authentic sense of self.

Grief and Loss Counseling

Grief is a deeply personal experience that can affect emotional, physical, and relational well-being. Our grief counseling services provide a compassionate space for individuals to process loss, whether due to death, divorce, major life changes, or other forms of significant transition. Therapy focuses on helping individuals navigate the complex emotions of grief, find meaning after loss, and rebuild a sense of purpose and connection.

Humanistic Therapy

Humanistic therapy is a client-centered approach that emphasizes self-actualization, authenticity, and the inherent potential for growth. Therapists practicing humanistic therapy prioritize creating a warm, accepting environment where clients feel empowered to explore their feelings, values, and goals. This approach is particularly effective for individuals seeking to enhance self-esteem, foster personal growth, and live more authentically in alignment with their values.

IFS (Internal Family Systems)

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy views the mind as made up of distinct “parts,” each with its own perspective and role. Therapy focuses on helping clients understand and harmonize these internal parts, fostering greater self-compassion, emotional healing, and internal balance. IFS is particularly effective for trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges, and empowers clients to access a centered, wise "Self" to lead their internal system.

Insomnia Treatment

Insomnia is more than just trouble sleeping, it can have profound effects on physical health, emotional well-being, and daily functioning. At CBTAA, we offer Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), the gold-standard, non-medication treatment for chronic sleep difficulties. CBT-I helps individuals identify thoughts and behaviors that interfere with sleep, restructure sleep schedules, and establish healthier sleep patterns for long-term improvement.

Life Transitions

Major life transitions such as career changes, relocation, divorce, or family changes can create stress, uncertainty, and emotional upheaval. Life transitions counseling provides support during these periods of adjustment, helping individuals process emotions, build resilience, and develop strategies for navigating change. Therapy focuses on fostering adaptability, clarifying goals, and strengthening inner resources for growth.

Men’s Issues

Men face unique challenges when it comes to mental health, often related to societal expectations around masculinity, emotional expression, work-life balance, identity, and relationships. Therapy for men's issues focuses on creating a safe environment where individuals can explore emotions, stressors, and goals without judgment. Our therapists help men develop healthier coping strategies, improve communication, and navigate transitions while honoring their authentic experiences.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) integrates cognitive therapy principles with mindfulness practices to prevent the recurrence of depression and reduce anxiety symptoms. Clients learn to recognize early warning signs of emotional distress, relate differently to negative thoughts, and cultivate present-moment awareness. MBCT is particularly effective for individuals with a history of recurrent depression or chronic anxiety, offering tools for long-term emotional resilience.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is characterized by persistent patterns of angry, irritable moods, argumentative behaviors, and defiance toward authority figures. Therapy focuses on building emotional regulation skills, improving family communication, and helping children and adolescents develop healthier ways of expressing needs and managing frustration. Parent training and family interventions are often key components of effective ODD treatment.

Panic Disorder

Panic Disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and persistent worry about future attacks. Therapy focuses on helping individuals understand the physiological and psychological factors that drive panic, and teaches skills to reduce avoidance, fear of sensations, and catastrophic thinking. Exposure-based interventions and cognitive restructuring are central to reducing the cycle of panic and restoring a sense of safety and control.

Perfectionism

While striving for excellence can be motivating, perfectionism often leads to chronic dissatisfaction, anxiety, burnout, and avoidance behaviors. Therapy for perfectionism helps individuals recognize unrelenting standards, challenge rigid thought patterns, develop self-compassion, and learn to embrace growth over flawless outcomes. Treatment typically draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and acceptance-based approaches.

Phobias

Phobias involve intense, irrational fears of specific objects or situations that can significantly interfere with daily life. Therapy focuses on gradual, systematic exposure to feared stimuli in a controlled, supportive environment, paired with cognitive restructuring techniques to challenge catastrophic thinking. Evidence-based treatments like Exposure Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are highly effective in helping individuals overcome phobias.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe mood disorder that occurs in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, causing significant emotional and physical symptoms. Therapy for PMDD focuses on symptom management through cognitive-behavioral interventions, mindfulness strategies, emotional regulation techniques, and coordination with medical providers if needed. Addressing PMDD can help individuals regain a sense of stability, empowerment, and improved quality of life.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events, leading to symptoms such as flashbacks, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, and avoidance. Trauma-focused therapies, including Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), and EMDR (where applicable), help individuals process traumatic memories, reduce symptoms, and regain a sense of safety and control. Therapy is conducted at a pace that respects each person's readiness and emotional needs.

Psychosis

Psychosis involves disruptions in thinking, perception, and reality testing, and can be a symptom of conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression. Therapy for psychosis focuses on helping individuals develop insight into their experiences, improve coping strategies, and manage symptoms through evidence-based treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp). Support may also include family education and coordinated care with psychiatry.

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy is designed to identify and heal deeply entrenched negative patterns (schemas) that develop early in life and affect current emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. By addressing these maladaptive schemas, clients can break free from self-defeating patterns, improve self-esteem, and foster healthier relationships. Schema Therapy integrates elements of cognitive, behavioral, psychodynamic, and attachment theories for a comprehensive approach to long-standing emotional challenges.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health condition that affects thinking, perception, emotions, and behavior. Effective treatment involves a combination of medication management, psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral interventions, and skill-building to support functional living and symptom management. Therapy aims to enhance quality of life, support recovery goals, and foster empowerment and community integration.

School Refusal

School refusal involves significant emotional distress that prevents a child or adolescent from attending school consistently. Therapy focuses on identifying underlying causes—such as anxiety, depression, or social difficulties—and developing coping strategies to reduce avoidance behaviors. Parent involvement, collaboration with schools, and gradual reintegration plans are key elements of effective intervention.

Skin-Picking, Hair-Pulling, and Trichotillomania

Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) such as skin-picking (excoriation disorder) and hair-pulling (trichotillomania) involve recurrent, compulsive behaviors that can cause physical damage and emotional distress. Therapy focuses on increasing awareness of triggers, developing competing responses, and addressing underlying emotional regulation challenges through evidence-based interventions like Habit Reversal Training (HRT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Social Anxiety

Social Anxiety Disorder involves an intense fear of being judged, criticized, or humiliated in social or performance situations. Therapy focuses on challenging negative thought patterns, gradually increasing exposure to feared situations, and building confidence in social skills. Evidence-based treatments like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) have strong support for helping individuals manage and reduce social anxiety symptoms effectively.

Teen Therapy

Teen therapy at CBTAA provides a supportive space for adolescents to navigate the unique emotional, social, and academic challenges of this developmental stage. Therapy may focus on issues such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, family conflict, identity development, or school-related stress. Our therapists use evidence-based approaches tailored to the needs of teens and adolescents, fostering resilience, self-awareness, and emotional regulation skills that carry into adulthood.

Tics and Tourette Syndrome

Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or sounds that are difficult to control and often begin in childhood. Therapy for tics, including Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT), focuses on building awareness of premonitory urges and teaching strategies to reduce tic frequency and intensity. Treatment may also address associated challenges like anxiety, ADHD, or social difficulties to support overall well-being.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy helps individuals process and heal from overwhelming life experiences, whether stemming from abuse, violence, accidents, loss, or chronic stress. Using trauma-informed approaches such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), or EMDR (where applicable), our clinicians provide a safe, supportive environment for healing. Therapy focuses on reducing trauma-related symptoms, building emotional regulation, and restoring a sense of empowerment and safety.

Women’s Issues

Women may encounter distinct mental health challenges related to reproductive transitions, societal pressures, body image, career balancing, relationships, and identity.
