With over 45 years of experience and as a recognized leader in the field, Scott is an expert at treating a broad spectrum of psychiatric conditions and issues, ranging from everyday problems to the most complex of situations. He is known to approach therapy with kindness, curiosity, and deep therapeutic knowledge. His clients describe him as highly relatable, humorous, engaging, and collaborative.
Widely regarded as an expert in the field, Scott is an Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa. He is a Founding Fellow and Certified Cognitive Behavior Therapy trainer and consultant in the Academy of Cognitive & Behavioral Therapies. He received CBT training at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, established by the founder of CBT himself, and has also pursued extensive training in ACT and DBT. He remains involved as a national and international CBT trainer and is committed to bringing the best science-based therapies to the people he serves.
At the University of Iowa, where he was the Director of Clinical Training, he led an innovative statewide training program for community clinicians, providing training in a variety of CBT therapies. He conducted research on CBT for psychosis, co-developed a DBT program for suicidal and self-injurious youth, and co-led the development of the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy program for depression. He also authors the book on, and specializes in working with, people who are coping with life-threatening medical illnesses, including cancer.
Scott obtained his undergraduate degree at the University of Oregon, and received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Temple University. He interned at the Upstate Medical Center of New York and did subsequent postdoctoral fellowships in family research and therapy at The Center for Family Research of George Washington University Medical Center, and in child psychology in The Children’s Rehabilitation Unit at Kansas University Medical Center.
Scott is widely published in peer-reviewed journals and is the author of three books on Cognitive Behavior Therapy. He is beginning work on a new book for the general public, on CBT skills for staying sane in tough times. As reflected by his work on this book, Scott is especially committed to helping people cope with the many challenges we all face in current turbulent times.
His books include:
